Nose Surgery

During a traditional rhinoplasty procedure, Dr. Kayem surgically removes, rearranges, or reshapes cartilage, bone, and/or soft tissue via incisions he creates inside your nose. In some instances, additional skin or tissue may be removed or added in order to change the shape of the nose in the way you and Dr. Kayem have discussed. This type of rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthetic in Dr. Kayem’s Beverly Hills outpatient surgical center. You’ll wear a light splint after surgery for a short time, though you can return to most normal activities after a couple of days.

Non-invasive rhinoplasty (also called non-surgical rhinoplasty, minimally invasive rhinoplasty, and liquid rhinoplasty) uses facial fillers to soften bumps or even out the nose’s contours. Since fillers are injectable, there are no incisions, no discomfort and no downtime.

Both men and women can benefit from rhinoplasty, but in young people traditional rhinoplasty surgery is not recommended until their facial features are fully formed. Non-invasive rhinoplasty, though, can be performed on younger patients.

Dr. Kayem is a facial aesthetic surgeon and an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor), so he is well versed in the nose’s structural function as well as its aesthetics.

Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are expected for several days after nose surgery. Cold compresses can help with swelling and discomfort. You may be asked to keep your head raised and to rest for the first few days. A splint is usually placed on the nose and removed at a follow-up visit.

The nose may feel blocked while the inside heals. Most swelling settles over the first weeks, and some continues to change slowly for months. Strenuous activity is usually avoided for several weeks. Dr. Kayem will give you specific instructions for your recovery.

Nose surgery can also address structural problems inside the nose that affect breathing. This is discussed during the evaluation.

• Skin irritation from tape or bandaging
• Blocked breathing from swelling inside the nose
• Complications of anesthesia
• A result that differs from what you expected, which may require a second procedure
