Liposuction

Liposuction removes extra fatty tissue from your:

• Face
• Arms
• Abdomen
• Thighs
• Buttocks
• Even your breasts (both for women’s breasts and men’s chests)

Liposuction is performed under a local anesthetic in Dr. Kayem’s surgical center. During the procedure, the doctor will insert a cannula (a very thin tube) under your skin and suction fat through that tube. Dr. Kayem uses very small cannulas, which provide smoother results, less post-procedure discomfort, and especially tiny entry sites, about the size of a freckle.

You may experience some bruising and swelling after the procedure, but it usually begins to abate after a week. Due to the post-procedure swelling, your new shape won’t be obvious for several months.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure, and it should always be conducted by an experienced surgeon.

Liposuction is usually an outpatient procedure, but you will need someone to drive you home. Swelling, bruising, soreness, and numbness in the treated areas are common afterward. How quickly you recover depends on the areas treated, your age, and your overall health. Dr. Kayem will give you specific instructions, including when to return to work and exercise.

Liposuction removes fat from specific areas. It is not a weight-loss treatment.

All surgery carries risk. Possible complications of liposuction include:

• A reaction to anesthesia
• Bleeding, or a collection of blood or fluid under the skin that may need to be drained
• Infection
• Changes in sensation
• Scarring
• Allergic reactions
• Damage to structures beneath the skin
• Dents or an uneven contour, which may need further treatment

Rare but serious complications include blood clots and fat entering the bloodstream. Tell Dr. Kayem about any history of blood clots, heart disease, or diabetes, and about any blood thinners you take.
